Missing School For After School

(I know it's been over a week since my last blog post, I'm sorry. It's finals season.)
Getting up at four in the morning is not easy, trust me.
After all thirty or so of us had squeezed into three vans, drove downtown, waited forever for the coach bus to arrive, and got on the bus and got comfortable-- it was 5:30.
Even though Harrisburg is in the same state as Pittsburgh and only a few hours away, it felt like we were driving to California instead.
(That might be because I forgot to charge my phone the night before and brought nothing to read. Oops?)
I sat next to my brother during the ride there and back, which was interesting to say the least. He really needed both seats for himself with his long-ass legs.
The reason for my recent trip to Harrisburg? It's simple, really.
Trump's budget proposal cuts all funding for after school programs like The Pittsburgh Project (or TPP), a nonprofit and faith-based organization that helps vulnerable homeowners maintain their houses as well as offering after school and summer programs.
It was through them that I met, and got to know, my brother.
While I was there, I got to speak with local Representative Wheatley and had a tour of the Capitol building (which was absolutely gorgeous in person BTW)
After that they served us a pretty good lunch and my friends and I hung out for a bit before getting back on the bus and going home.
(Another long-ass bus ride.)
Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time (APOST) helped out a lot during the whole trip (TBH, the Pittsburgh Project just showed up. APOST did the rest.) and they even served us snacks.
In fact, Representative Wheatley is going to be visiting The Pittsburgh Project on May 25 for a tour of the campus. I'll be there when he visits, so I'll have a blog post for next week.
Until then...
